Open Daily For Walk-Ins

Did you know?

3-4 million homeless cats and dogs are euthanized every year in the United States.

Spaying and neutering your pet is the most effective attack plan we have against pet overpopulation.   A female cat can have at least 2 litters a year.  She will average 4 kittens a litter.   That’s at least 8 kittens.  If all of these kittens reproduce successfully within their first year of life, by the year’s end, there will be an additional 40 cats to feed (her 8 kittens, and their 32 offspring).

You can see how quickly cats can multiply into the thousands.  Although people are more careful about letting their dogs out, their reproductive cycles are similar.  Spaying just one animal before they have any litters has a huge impact on the population problem and preventing unnecessary euthanasia.

What if you don’t let your dog or cat out? All it takes is one mistake.  Where there is a will, there is a way.  If your female cat gets out she will likely come home pregnant.  If your male gets out, he has been up to no good.  Even if you think you would like kittens or puppies, it is important to remember that they might not go to responsible homes.  If even one does not get spayed or neutered, you have contributed to the problem.  In addition, puppies and kittens cost money.  They need frequent veterinary care and supplies like food, bedding, and toys.

You’re still not convinced.  Why else should you do it? There are many benefits to the individual health of your pet as well. For the ladies– you have eliminated the risk of uterine and mammary infections.  If you spay your dog early in life (before 1st or 2nd heat) you have almost eliminated her risk of mammary cancer. For the gentlemen-you have eliminated or reduced the risk of prostate infection, testicular cancer, some benign tumors, stud tail, certain kinds of hernias, roaming, aggressive behaviors, and inappropriate urination.
