From Mid-West Puppy Mills to the Jersey Shore

EATONTOWN, NJ, September 2, 2010 – Recently the Best Friends Animal Society announced the 1,000th Rescued Puppy Mill Dog Arrived in Manhattan along with approximately 150 puppy mill dogs from various Midwestern states. (Click to see video coverage) Representatives from the Monmouth County SPCA (MCSPCA), along with other Jersey and some New York humane organizations, were there to greet them as they arrived to a green-carpet welcome.

Out of the thirteen dogs received at the MCSPCA, the majority are adults that were used mostly for breeding. Imagine at the age of five years old being unwanted, because you no longer filled a breeders needs. That is what has happened to these dogs in the prime of their lives. Instead of being killed or sold at auction for pennies, Best Friends Animal Society stepped in and rescued these “unwanted” animals so that they stand a chance to find their ” happily ever after” with a loving family.

The rescue and transport of the dogs are part of Best Friends Animal Society’s Puppies Aren’t Products® campaign, which educates consumers about where most traditional pet stores get their inventory. Many are large-scale commercial breeding operations where puppies and breeding parents are forced to live in squalid conditions, with little or no medical care. Best Friends Animal Society is a nonprofit, membership organization whose building of no-kill programs and partnerships hope to bring about a day when there are No More Homeless Pets. You can learn more about Best Friends Animal Society and their programs at www.bestfriends.org.

The dogs arrived at One Randall Island in New York City late in the morning on Wednesday September 1st, where ten area pet rescue groups were on hand to welcome the dogs and escort to them to the next leg of their long journey, their new temporary homes.

Isa Fowler, MCSPCA Adoption Counselor Manager, along with Steve Arrison provided the transportation to the thirteen dogs that traveled down the Garden State Parkway to the Jersey Shore. “This is the third Pup My Ride transport we have been involved in, however, the previous transports took place in our own parking lot,” Ms. Fowler commented. Once the dogs arrived at the Eatontown, NJ organization they were medically and behaviorally assessed by our staff. All puppies received are either spayed or neutered. “A fair portion of the dogs do need dental work done as well as leash and potty training due to the extreme lack of socialization and attention these dogs have received”, added Fowler.

There are various pure bred dogs among the selection that the MCSPCA received from the Pup My Ride transport including several small breeds. The oldest dogs that came off the transport are only five years old with most of the dogs approximately a year old.

You can track the progress of the Pup My Ride pooches on the MCSPCA website www.monmouthcountyspca.org or you can call the Monmouth County SPCA Homeward Bound Adoption Center at 732-542-1525 to learn more about the dogs’ availability for adoption.

Get Ready to Rock with Half Price Cats & Kittens

> Cats and kittens for adoption

EATONTOWN, NJ, September 1, 2010 – With over 300 purring and prowling felines at the Monmouth County SPCA it seems only fitting to turn them loose with Kittenpalooza. “Whether you are looking for a kitten or cat we have them in all shapes, sizes and colors just waiting to be adopted”, said Francesca Alexander, MCSPCA Community Cat Coordinator.

Sadly the summer ends as usual at the MCSPCA with cat overpopulation. As kitten season comes to an end, shelters traditionally find themselves overcrowded with more cats and kittens than adopters. This year we decided to have a month long celebration to find these purrfectly wonderful felines their forever homes. During the month of September the adoption price of cats and kittens has been clawed in half. Each adoption fee includes spay/neuter, rabies, distemper vaccinations, deworming, flea treatment, FIV/FeLV testing and a microchip.

Looking for a cat that is ready to rock with you or a lap cat to sit and enjoy some easy listening music? Ms. Alexander advises that “It is best to go with an adult cat since they already have their personality established. Kittens develop their personality over time so it’s very difficult to predict what they will be like as an adult.”

While getting the cats that are already here adopted is a top priority, we believe that educating the public to spay/neuter their cats with the same diligence that is paid to dogs would help put an end to kitten season. “Our goal is to have no more homeless pets, so that means no more kittens being born outside.” added Alexander. The vision of the Alley Cat prowling the neighborhood nightly is not an uncommon one, but often that cat hasn’t been spayed or neutered. Before you know it, one innocent moonlight stroll has resulted in an unwanted litter of kittens. The MCSPCA Vogel Spay/Neuter Clinic offers low cost spay and neutering. If you would like more information or would like to schedule an appointment, please call 732-542-3125.

To adopt one of the stars of Kittenpalooza be sure to visit the MCSPCA Homeward Bound Adoption Center at 260 Wall Street, Eatontown, NJ 07724. The adoption center is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday 1pm to 5pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. You can also check out our feline flirts online at www.monmouthcountyspca.org or call 732-542-1525 for more adoption details.
