HAZLET — A local man who neglected 51 cats in his home was found guilty of animal cruelty Thursday and ordered to pay a $2,000 fine, according to Buddy Amato, the chief of the Monmouth County SPCA.

Henry J. Deininger, 61, pleaded guilty in municipal court, Amato said.

Municipal Court Judge Thomas Foley also ordered Deininger not to have any new pets for five years.

“He can’t have so much as a goldfish,’’ Amato said.

Five cats that Deininger owns must be transported to a veterinarian for phsyicals as well as to be spayed or neutered, Amato said.

The 51 cats removed from his home March 13 were sick, many with respiratory infections and other illnesses, he said. Many of the animals had to be euthanized because they were so sick.
