Broken Puppy Finds a Guardian Angel

While most puppies spend their time romping, pouncing and sleeping, little Kahlua has spent all four and half months of her life suffering and facing impending euthanasia. Luckily this little “broken” puppy has a guardian angel, Deann Bowen, a veterinary technician of the Monmouth County SPCA.

The MCSPCA is in a very unique position in the animal welfare community where it can reach out and help those who need it most. Routinely the MCSPCA will relocate animals from overcrowded shelters in and out of New Jersey. Last year 468 dogs were transported into the MCSPCA from NJ and beyond to find loving homes in the Monmouth County area. It was during one of those routine transports that Ms. Bowen heard of the little lab mix puppy from South Carolina who was left beaten and abandoned with a rope embedded in her neck. Immediately Deann gave the necessary funds to help transport this forgotten beauty.

This is not the first time that Deann and the staff at the MCSPCA have aided a young wounded pup that was facing the impending end of such a young life. Kahlua is actually the third female with the same type of injuries that the MCSPCA helped rescue. Horrible conditions such as malnourishment, upper respiratory disease and serious signs of physical mistreatment were consistently observed. Each was received at the MCSPCA with either a rope or collar embedded in the neck, evidence of experiencing beatings and abandonment. The staff of the MCSPCA has dedicated themselves to “repairing” these broken little lives so they can experience a life filled with love.

In the four weeks since she was rescued, Kahlua’s neck has started to heal and she has added on some weight, but her long road back to recovery is not over. Not able to walk, she still needs to have surgery for her fractured hip. However, this procedure is on hold since her upper respiratory infection turned into pneumonia. During all her suffering, Kahlua has remained silent. It is believed that the injury to her neck and throat were so severe that she has lost the ability to bark and will need surgery to remove the scar tissue that is creating a tourniquet type effect around her throat.

What hasn’t been broken from all of the torment this young girl has endured is her spirit or her ability to trust. Kahlua loves the visits she gets from her rescuers and shows it by showering them with puppy kisses and tail wags that melt your heart. Sadly it is all too often that we see the innocent victims whose only fault is that they want to love and be loved.
