EATONTOWN, NJ, October 12, 2010 – Victoria Stilwell from Animal Planet’s It’s Me or the Dog visited the Monmouth County SPCA Homeward Bound Adoption Center before her show at the Count Basie Theater last night. She toured the new state-of-the-art facility and spoke with board members and employees while selecting six dogs to perform on stage with her.
When asked how the show went, Community Cat Coordinator, Francesca Alexander replied “AWESOME!” Perri Blind, Volunteer Coordinator said “I really think it was an eye opening experience for the audience to see the variety of dogs we have at the Adoption Center.” Staff members and volunteers were impressed with how down to earth Victoria was and how talented she was with the dogs. Victoria made sure to highlight Monmouth County SPCA throughout the show.
Victoria is passionate about using positive reinforcement training methods that enhance a dog’s ability to learn while increasing confidence, resulting in a healthy, well-adjusted pet. She is firmly against the use of forceful, dominance-based training techniques which often result in ‘quick fixes’ but ultimately cause more long-term harm than good. Executive Director Laurie Garrison said “Victoria is such a strong advocate for animals, her show highlighted all that is good in dogs while promoting misunderstood breeds such as pit bulls, and imploring people to adopt from rescue shelters instead of buying from a pet store. We thank Victoria so much; it was wonderful to meet such an amazing person who helps animals every day with her work.”
All six dogs who appeared on stage (Tara, Scarlett, Joker, Freckles, Tootsie and Morris) are up for adoption at the Monmouth County SPCA.
