After a long 22-hour drive, the trailer truck finally pulls into the parking lot of the Monmouth County SPCA. 150 dogs rescued from terrible puppy mills in the Midwest have arrived! We have partnered with Best Friends Animal Society to support their “Puppies are not Products” campaign, and we collaborated with 8 other rescue groups to save these dogs.
Puppy mills are basically puppy farms, where mother dogs are forced to have litter after litter in cramped, dirty chicken wire enclosures with little or no human contact. Their puppies are taken away again and again to be sold on the internet or puppy stores. This abuse makes these dogs old before their time, and after only 3-6 years they can no longer reproduce at which time they stop making money and become throw-aways. These are the poor dogs that were rescued by Best Friends and brought to NJ. The Monmouth County SPCA took 14 dogs who will be available for adoption on Monday.
